Take the plunge into Data Lake 2.0 – There is room for everyone!

As a deep low pressure system swept through Britain in December, the northern counties bore the brunt of the relentless, heavy rainfall which came from storms Desmond and Frank.

In a similar fashion, in the technology world, EMC made strides in enhancing and filling their own technological lake and introduced us to Data Lake 2.0.

As nature evolves, the streams extend out into lakes and onwards to rivers, Data Lake 2.0 extends the capabilities of structured and unstructured data from the core data centre out into the edge and beyond there to the Cloud.

Whilst businesses are keen to optimise IT resources and lower costs, considerations from within EMC have been looked at and through agility and efficiencies we are now able to address our goals regardless of whether these are short term or long term goals, or whether these are local or global strategies.

Opportunities at the Edge

Businesses with networks of remote or branch offices often have challenges managing and protecting data generated at these locations. Data at edge locations is growing. A recent study showed that approximately 69% of organisations now have more than 10 TB of data per branch office compared to just 23% in 2011. Edge locations are often inefficient islands of storage with inconsistent data protection practices. Previously, data at the edge is also generally outside of the data lake; therefore it cannot easily be incorporated into data analytics projects.

EMC IsilonSD Edge is designed to address these challenges and offers key advantages for businesses with edge locations. EMC IsilonSD is a new family of Software-Defined Storage products that leverages the power of EMC Isilon scaleout NAS and the Isilon oneFS operating system. IsilonSD Edge runs on commodity hardware (x86 servers) in a VMWare ESX environment.

Regarded as the #1 scale-out NAS platform in the industry, EMC Isilon can assist in eliminating costly silos of storage, simplifying management, increasing data protection and ensure our customers get more value from their investment.

 

Opportunities at the Cloud

Nearly all businesses today are looking to leverage the cloud to assist in cutting costs, simplify IT management and gain virtually limitless storage capacity. However, many question how to integrate their on premise storage infrastructure with the Cloud. The new Isilon Cloudpools solution addresses this need.

Cloudpools provides policy-based, automated tiering that allows customers to seamlessly integrate with the Cloud as an additional storage tier from an existing Isilon cluster within their core datacentre. Benefits of this include addressing the rapid data growth and optimisation of datacentre storage resources by using the cloud as a highly economical storage tier with massive storage capacity for cold or frozen data that is rarely used or accessed.
